Her Style Is M.I.A.

It breaks my heart to say this, when only today I bumped "Paper Planes" as I drove up Franklin with the top down. But. My beloved M.I.A.'s style seemed to be, well... M.I.A., at the MoMA's 40th Annual Party In The Garden.

It almost looks like she is wearing a mermaid costume.

Know what?
I love her anyway.

Reblogging (Re-Dressing?) Mary Rambin

Click here to read my Tumblr Tantrum about this self-proclaimed fashionista, and "designer" of Moe Bags.

Oh my...

(I know this pic didn't come from MySpace, but I wasn't sure where else to place this... well... DISGRACE of a look... *stifles a chuckle*)

But the shorts are ESCADA. Any self-respecting 65 year old can SEE THAT! Mary Rambin is the only one who doesn't know Mary Rambin can barely dress herself. She needs to stay out of her mom's closet / store in freaking Texas. She consistently dresses like a broke senior citizen.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 11, 2008 3:19 PM

Although those shorts aren't nearly as bad as that shit brown MISSONI skirt she tries to breath new life into as a dress. I imagine the dent in it from the old hag's ass who used to wear it has been strategically repositioned to Mary's stuffed bra region.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 11, 2008 6:21 PM

So glad someone finally said something. As I read her blog, I started second guessing myself...maybe I just didn't know what style looked like, or maybe mine was off...because I have NEVER thought she looked good in any of her posted outfits. Why do all her shoes look like they came from Bargain Basement? I don't care what high end brand they are when they are that ugly! Nice yellow cut-out platforms. What??

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 11, 2008 7:11 PM

Thank god someone finally called her out on this. I'm always confused by Mary's "style". And...what's with the extensions? They make her look like an '80's rock star a'la David Lee Roth.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2008 5:48 AM

I think she's beautiful and definitely dressed for the hot weather in NY.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2008 8:47 AM

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Don't know what you find likable about Julia Allison, but Mary is queen of mean and has no fashion sense at all.

I visit just to laugh at her outfits.

her extensions are as nasty as julia's and her color is horrible.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2008 12:50 PM

Thank you for finally pointing out how shiteous her sense of style is. She gladly admits that a lot of her clothes come from her mom's consignment store, but does not realize that her outfits SCREAM second-hand crap and not "vintage style" like she thinks.

By Anonymous Nicola, at June 12, 2008 12:58 PM

Ew. She posted a sad, defensive response on her blog. I can smell the stinky whiff of desperation from here.

By Anonymous Nicola, at June 12, 2008 1:11 PM

Wow. I am shocked someone who claims to have such style cant see that she makes her own style with her clothes. Its sad when people hate on others style instead of just appreciating someone’s individuality. Not everyone has to follow your rules for style they can do what they want. Thats the great thing about being who we are we can choose to wear and say what ever the heck we want.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2008 1:23 PM

Regardless of whether you likes Mary's outfit or not, I thought the way she reblogging your comments was very fair. She didn't attack you or your blog, just calmly explained her choices and the points she was trying to make. I was impressed.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2008 3:44 PM

It's time someone reblogged this woman. I like to check out her blog to see her latest horrible ensemble. Never seen anyone make designer clothes look worse. After seeing this highly objectionable 1980's look that was never even fashionable in Omaha in the 80s, I prayed someone would start a reblogging mary blog. This woman needs to stop. She is the last person on earth who should be dispensing fashion advice (and she is the worst dressed of her friends). And her jewelry....middle class PTA lady look.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2008 4:11 PM

Also, girlfriend needs to tone it down with the spinning classes and juice fasts -- she looks positively ana.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 12, 2008 4:57 PM

I am SO glad you reblogged Mary. When I saw her post on the now infamous outfit my first reaction was who is the skinny legged linebacker? That top is hideous...first thing in the morning or at the end of the day as she claims. I now check in on her blog to see what NOT to wear...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 13, 2008 6:25 AM

Just because you have a fashion blog doesn't make you a fashion expert. Anyone can have a blog... clearly. Why don't you let other people dress the way they want to? When you have a hit television show on TLC with the most fabulous gay man on television, *then* you can tell other people what to wear.

Until then, stick to your own closet.

By Anonymous Allison, at June 13, 2008 6:29 AM

Thank you!!!! Mary positions herself as a fashion expert and an IT/tech person. She is neither....where can i buy some of that blind self confidence?

Hey Allison!~

It's not just "having a fashion blog" that qualifies me to have one. I have worked IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY for over 13 years. So um, simmer down. I am a little more qualified to do so than a girl who made up some purses with inter-looping handles and who now doles out "style tips" on a Tumblr blog.

Toodles!

By Blogger Alana Joy, at June 13, 2008 9:54 AM

Sorry, Alana, I didn't realize you had been working in the fashion industry. You read so many fashion commentary blogs from people it's hard to tell who's who anymore.

Anyway, I realize that not everyone has the same tastes in fashion, but I still think it's mean that you rag on this girl for her choice in clothes. She's allowed her opinions on fashion, no? I don't always agree with what other self-proclaimed experts say but that doesn't mean their thoughts don't have value. Clothing is all about expression and feeling good, and if other people like her ideas than more power to them, right?

Why should she have to stop sharing her ideas and experiences just because others don't like them? If we all did that, no one would ever say anything.

By Anonymous Allison, at June 13, 2008 11:09 AM

When you post images of yourself on a blog and are claiming expertise, you are opening yourself up for critique. My posting wasn't meant to rag on her. It was a critique. I am just as entitled to posting my own opinions as she is. I didn't say her thoughts don't have value, I just don't agree with them. At. All.

Am I somehow trying to get her to take down her blog, that you say "Why should she have to stop sharing her ideas and experiences just because others don't like them?" No.

I don't want to open myself up to that kind of critique so I make my fashion blog about... FASHION! What a concept! Not about me personally. She chose to put herself out there, and that is a double edged sword.

By Blogger Alana Joy, at June 13, 2008 1:08 PM

Well, she's worked as both a model and a designer (the quality of her designs are open to interpretation, of course), so I'd say she has her own qualifications for issuing opinions on fashion. Furthermore, she definitely has her own style; it's hardly style-setting to wear the shorter shorts that every boutique and department store sells. Instead, she wore something a bit more unconventional that conveys, at least in my opinion, a sense of confidence in herself and her own image.
And that shirt is awful.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 14, 2008 10:42 AM

Wow. She looks really bad. Top to toe. And her shirt is see-through. Not that there's much to see. I've seen other photos of her, and her hair looks awful in all of them. She has her stylist dye her hair WHITE. It looks awful, Mary. Just awful. Go natural.

Ashley & Mary-Kate Olsen Launch "Elizabeth and James" Line Last Night In New York

Last night in New York, the dynamic duo Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, officially launched their third venture into the fashion realm. Their new line, Elizabeth and James promises to be just as interesting as the girls themselves. Combining both a softer more feminine look with a masculine, tailored look to represent the siblings they named the line after. The incredibly talented sisters have been involved in the design process on every level, from sketching and production, to styling.

They already have two other clothing lines, and unlike most celeb's who come out with their own brands and lines, I really think these girls have a long future in fashion. They really seem to understand design concepts and trends. I think this is less about creating clothes for their fans to mimic their look, and more about their true love for the art that is fashion, making wearable clothes that are comfortable and chic at the same time.

A Sparkling Auction at Christie’s: BLING

I would like to take a moment to introduce you all to Couture Cult's very first correspondent! Covering all things FETCH & FABULOUS in NYC, Amelia Posada! My best friend and fellow fashionista, I hope you guys get to love her! Her first story for us is, OF COURSE, covering a jewel auction held at Christie's...

A Sparkling Auction at Christie’s
By Amelia Posada

The stakes were high as bidders from around the globe took part in one of the most anticipated auctions of the season at Christie’s yesterday, where buyers had the chance to bid on some rare and important jewels, as well as some items from the estate of the late actress Lucille Ball.

Private dealers, jewelry connoisseurs, and spectators packed into the saleroom at Christie’s annual fall “Magnificent Jewels” auction and within the first 45 seconds of the sale, the first item – a pair of silver candlesticks by Buccellati, had jumped from $4,000 to $10,000.

The sale started promptly at 10am, and the room was buzzing with chatter as the bidding wars began with Christie’s employees bidding by proxy for people via telephone and internet, vying with bidders in the audience.

The total in sales for the day was $38,878,650, the highest selling item going for $2,885,800 and the lowest selling item, a colored diamond ring, going for $1,375.

The most anticipated sale of the day was an extremely rare blue diamond ring, a 5.07-carat rectangular cut “fancy” stone within a pave-set pink diamond, which sold for the highest price of the day to an anonymous buyer over the phone. The blue diamond was simply described as having been the “property of a gentleman”. It was the last sale of the day.

Twelve items from the estate of Lucille Ball were auctioned off, including five pendant necklaces, two watches, two rings, a retro diamond and gold evening bag and matching cigarette case, selling for a combined total of $331,000. Part of the proceeds went to the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center, in Jamestown, NY.

The “Magnificent Jewels” sale is one of the most important and widely anticipated auctions of the year at Christie’s and the sale was very successful.

“It was an amazing, incredible sale,” said Kate Swan, a Christie’s spokeswoman. “We were so pleased; it was a packed room. The jewelry market, the diamond market in particular, is so strong, and it was such a great, great sale, we are all very pleased.”

Target To Feature Model-less Fashion Show

Mega-brand Target plans to show their new collection for Fall/Winter by putting on a virtual fashion show in Grand Central Terminal in New York City on November 6th and 7th.

"The retailer will repeat the show every 10 minutes from noon to midnight the first day and 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. the second day. It also plans to post a video of the show on YouTube, Facebook and its Web site."

Hmm. A fashion show with no models? With no ACTUAL clothes? Where is this leading? Does the future of runway see where the catwalk ends?

Just For Kicks: HP Lovecraft NYC

"I was born the year Hayley's Comet passed by, hence the name." says Hayley Parker, sole scribbler of H.P. Lovecraft NYC. A woman after my own heart, Hayley customizes Keds and Vans with textile markers, a bedazzler, and interesting embellishments she finds. Her work is beyond cool, and as they are hand created, each pair of shoes is one of a kind. She also takes requests, quipping that one client requested "Mary-Kate on one shoe, and Ashley on the other. Breathtaking!"

Hmm. Okay. Awesomeness! My favorite are the Lichtenstein looking pair! I'm a sucker for Pop Art and one of a kind fashion. I'm not the biggest fan of sneakers, but these are a must have! Gimme.

Costume Institute Gala

Last night in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted the Costume Institute Gala, held in honor of Paul Poiret.

Paul Poiret was a pre-WWI era designer who pioneered in such designs as the suspender belt, the sheath dress, the sack dress, flesh colored stockings, culottes (now I know who to blame for THAT!), and the modern brassiere. He also designed oriental couture dresses and was the first coutourier to launch his own fragrance.

To give you a feel for the evening, here is a quote from AHN:

"Vogue magazine editor-in-chief Anna Wintour hosted the evening along with Nicolas Ghesquire of Balenciaga and actress Cate Blanchett. The three stood on the red carpet and greeted guests such as Kate Moss, who wore a backless black fishtail gown from her TopShop collection, Kirsten Dunst, who was in vintage midnight blue Yves Saint Laurent and Cameron Diaz, who showed up in a strapless hot pink gown by Dior by John Galliano."

Celebrities of both the fashion world, and the entertainment world alike, were dressed as though it was an award show (maybe better, let's be honest...). Let's take a look at who wore what.

Vouge editor-in-cheif Anna Wintour
Can we say Devil Wears Prada?

Ashley Olsen

Mary Kate Olsen
I think I prefer her look over her sister's, but they both really cleaned up nicely considering the usual bag-lady chic they go for. Is it me, or are they starting to resemble Meg Ryan?

Cate Blanchett
I really love this dress, but her hair and makeup is scaring me. Sad, I usually love her look.

Chloe Sevigny
One of my personal favoite's and a COUTURE CULT featured fashionista, Chloe nails it again!

Eva Mendes
This is an AMAZING dress, I love everything about this look. The shoes, the hair... two enthusiastic hair flips. However, I'm thinking it might look a tad casual for a GALA.

Jennifer Connely
I love you Jen, so please, no offense but: TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!

Jennifer Lopez
Si.

Jessica Simpson
This is a hot picture: of a stripper. You'd think being in the business for years she'd learn there is an appropriate time and place for each look, and this is just wrong.

Kirsten Dunst
It looks like she borrowed this from the set of Marie Antoinette. The shoes are hot, but EVERYTHING ELSE is NOT! Ugh: Fug.

Lindsay Lohan
Good job, Linds! THIS is COUTURE! This is sexy, without being overtly so, like Miss Simpson. She looks majorly HAUTE!

Scarlett Johansson
No, no, no! I expected more from the face of Louis Vuitton.

Winona Ryder & Marc Jacobs
Couldn't she steal a better dress?

*special thanks to PopSugar for the images!

Be Scene

Kate Bosworth at the 2007 Food Bank of New York, Can-Do Awards dinner Monday night.

This dress is **stunning** on her, and her hair and make-up complement the overall look perfectly. I love love LOVE the neck of this dress! And the length is elegant and flatters her legs. She looks amazing!

Well the neck DOES look convenient I guess. If she gets hot, she can just use it as one of those hand-held fans. GO KATE!
