Costume Institute Gala

Last night in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosted the Costume Institute Gala, held in honor of Paul Poiret.

Paul Poiret was a pre-WWI era designer who pioneered in such designs as the suspender belt, the sheath dress, the sack dress, flesh colored stockings, culottes (now I know who to blame for THAT!), and the modern brassiere. He also designed oriental couture dresses and was the first coutourier to launch his own fragrance.

To give you a feel for the evening, here is a quote from AHN:

"Vogue magazine editor-in-chief Anna Wintour hosted the evening along with Nicolas Ghesquire of Balenciaga and actress Cate Blanchett. The three stood on the red carpet and greeted guests such as Kate Moss, who wore a backless black fishtail gown from her TopShop collection, Kirsten Dunst, who was in vintage midnight blue Yves Saint Laurent and Cameron Diaz, who showed up in a strapless hot pink gown by Dior by John Galliano."

Celebrities of both the fashion world, and the entertainment world alike, were dressed as though it was an award show (maybe better, let's be honest...). Let's take a look at who wore what.

Vouge editor-in-cheif Anna Wintour
Can we say Devil Wears Prada?

Ashley Olsen

Mary Kate Olsen
I think I prefer her look over her sister's, but they both really cleaned up nicely considering the usual bag-lady chic they go for. Is it me, or are they starting to resemble Meg Ryan?

Cate Blanchett
I really love this dress, but her hair and makeup is scaring me. Sad, I usually love her look.

Chloe Sevigny
One of my personal favoite's and a COUTURE CULT featured fashionista, Chloe nails it again!

Eva Mendes
This is an AMAZING dress, I love everything about this look. The shoes, the hair... two enthusiastic hair flips. However, I'm thinking it might look a tad casual for a GALA.

Jennifer Connely
I love you Jen, so please, no offense but: TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!

Jennifer Lopez
Si.

Jessica Simpson
This is a hot picture: of a stripper. You'd think being in the business for years she'd learn there is an appropriate time and place for each look, and this is just wrong.

Kirsten Dunst
It looks like she borrowed this from the set of Marie Antoinette. The shoes are hot, but EVERYTHING ELSE is NOT! Ugh: Fug.

Lindsay Lohan
Good job, Linds! THIS is COUTURE! This is sexy, without being overtly so, like Miss Simpson. She looks majorly HAUTE!

Scarlett Johansson
No, no, no! I expected more from the face of Louis Vuitton.

Winona Ryder & Marc Jacobs
Couldn't she steal a better dress?

Just for KICKS

Spring is fast approaching, and it's time to get those pedicures and bring out the spring and summer shoes... The wedge is SO "in" right now, and this is the perfect pair to KICK off the season. By Juicy Couture, they are the perfect daytime shoe, in neutral shades, with a lace overlay on the base. And I absolutely ADORE a lace up shoe. This will look amazing with a pretty dress, or sassy skirt. Even better, I am offering a SALE PRICE:

Compare at $250.00: Couture Cult is selling this shoe for only $149.99! That's like, $100 you are saving, so now there is no excuse not to get that pedicure we were talking about earlier, ladies!

Featured Fashionista: Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan:

Ok, so I guess this is the first inclination here in this blog as to my Lindsay obsession... say what you will about her hard partying ways, THIS blog is about the clothes, and she has got a definite style of her own. She looks "cool" in pretty much anything she puts on, because she seems to (at least subconsciously) understand that fashion is just as much about the woman who is wearing the clothes, as it is about the clothes themselves. She exudes sexy, innocent, fun, and fashionista: simply through a change of clothes. She brings amazing pieces to life with her attitude. As it should be. Attitude is EVERYTHING. (I want her wardrobe!)

From Me To You

So I'm really just learning as I go with this whole blog thing. I am really excited, then, to announce THIS: COUTURE CULT IS #1 IN RANKING ON BLOGTOPSITES.COM, IF YOU SEARCH UNDER THE KEYWORD "COUTURE"! Now, I know this doesn't mean this is the number one fashion blog EVER (well at least, according to blogtopsites.com, that is, lol) but it really has me motivated! I have a lot if ideas for new features and fun things to add to this blog, so don't forget to subscribe so you can keep up! I will NEVER sell your email address to SPAMMERS (ew, NOT hot!), so DO IT ALREADY!

I hope you all take a minute to check out the new online store COUTURE CULT! I literally sat for HOURS on end, selecting every individual item (there are now 1,000 items available!). I picked my favorite labels, and only the best of what they had to offer. It looks like the way this store works, is when you are ready to buy an item, you are redirected to the wholesaler and you buy from them, not directly from me. All that time you spend going from one online store to another, looking for the best price, is now saved so you can spend more time GETTING READY, lol. More than anything I want to live a little bit of my dream out, online. A store with everything from great dresses for day, evening, and going out: to casual everyday wear, like the newest, hottest denim: to special gifts, the BEST, impossible to find accessories, the MUST HAVE bag of the season, the finest in cosmetics, and books related only to fashion. Consider it a store full of reccomendations... from the Fashionista herself. Feel free to browse! For the shopper who doesn't want a salesperson breathing down their neck, this is the best way to go! You'll see brands carried in Bloomingdales, Barney's New York, and Kitson to name a few... so you never know what you'll find!

For those of you who have already subscribed, bookmarked, or simply visited: Thanks for the support! Sooooo much! I hope this blog catches on like the skinny jean... like big sunglasses... like the phrase "thats hot", lol!

If you have a fashion or beauty related blog or website, and would like to exchange links, feel free to drop me a line!

XOXO
AJ

Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.

To Top It All Off

This metallic lace top by Anna Sui is the perfect top to dress up jeans out on the town, or wear with a nice pair of skinny black pants. The ribbons on the shoulders make for a very feminine accent, and showing off bare shoulders is just a hint of sexy. The A-line shape of the garment means it will hide the imperfections of your body without making you look like you are wearing a tent. I love this! I have to have it! Buy it for me!

Myspace Disgrace

Regina: Oh my God, I love your skirt! Where did you get it?
Lea Edwards: It was my mom's in the '80s.
Regina: Vintage, so adorable.
Lea Edwards: Thanks.
Regina: [after girl walks away] That is the ugliest f-ing skirt I've ever seen.
~ Mean Girls

Don't get me wrong, an animal print scarf goes great as an accessory to a pin-up girl look, and a pair of animal printed shoes can dress up plain black in a fun, sexy way... But this girls outfit looks like Kelly Bundy fell in love with Encino Man and had a lovechild. Im sure she is "dressed up" (and I am using the term "dressed" very loosely, fyi) for some occasion or another, but I personally wouldn't be caught dead in this get-up: even on Halloween!

Have you ever heard of people taking pictures of that for fun? You know, to be silly? I mean, just because this girl is dressed like Mowgli from the Jungle Book in this picture doesn't mean anything. You're taking this critique too seriously. And besides, don't you think it's odd that you waste so much time on people's myspaces looking for ways to trash them?

Actually, Heather, it looks like YOU are taking it way too seriously. I think the humor in this is obvious ("this girls outfit looks like Kelly Bundy fell in love with Encino Man and had a lovechild"), and I also acknowledged that she is probably dressed like this for some occasion or another, though like I said I wouldn't even be caught in this on Halloween. So yes it does occur to me that maybe this was just for fun. Did it occur to YOU that maybe this posting was just for fun as well? I dont think it's odd that I find people with awful fashion sense on myspace and post their pictures here, nor do I think its a waste of time. I think its fun and funny. I do it for the blog. So its not a waste of time. Because it stirs up reactions from people like you, who are TRULY taking this too seriously when it is obviously meant to be taken in fun.

Duh.

Thanks for stopping by.

Kiss and MAKEUP

Mascara is something I absolutely cannot live without. Even on the days where I don't want to wear any makeup, I wear mascara. Being a natural blonde, who colors my hair darker, I almost need mascara to see that I even have eyelashes at all. I have tried practically every brand on the market, both drug store brands and department store brands. And my absolute cant-live-without-it favorite is:

Chanel Inimitable Mascara

I have it in both black for night time, and brown for day. At $26.50 it isnt too expensive, and you will definitely see what justifies the price when you use it. Your lashes truly will look longer and fuller, so you wont have to choose which aspect is more important to you. And it doesn't get clumpy, leaving you with those awful spidery looking lashes we sometimes see around. I find that if you put on one coat, and then wait a few minutes for it to dry, and add another, you will have the perfect look.

I just found it on Amazon for $23.00! YAY!

What's YOUR favorite mascara?
